CITY OF PEWAUKEE POLICE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 2008 “SPEED AN AGGRESSIVE DRIVING” ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM
The City of Pewaukee Police Department will again be actively enforcing speed and aggressive driving violations as part of a mobilization throughout Wisconsin in 2008. The department has received $18,000.00 in state funding to address the city's high accident rate.
Traffic crashes are not accidents, but are avoidable events caused by a single variable or chain of variables. Dedicated to reducing traffic injuries and fatalities by addressing factors that cause them, the Bureau of Transportation Safety coordinates a statewide behavioral highway safety program.
The City of Pewaukee Police Department is pleased to be part of and supports this program by recognizing the importance of providing safe roadways. Therefore, will vigorously enforce all traffic laws in accordance with the programs guidelines
The City of Pewaukee is ranked 4th highest of 53 Wisconsin municipalities that are grouped by a population of (10,000 – 24,999), for “Injury and Property Damage crashes and Economic Loss” in 2005. The city was recognized as a target area due to this high volume of traffic crashes. “There is no question…….that speed violations continue to be a problem” states City of Pewaukee Police Chief Gary Bach. Our involvement in this program underscores the department’s commitment to preventing the loss of life on our roads by enforcing some basic, common sense safety standards. In the first 6 months of 2006 officers responded to 193 reportable accidents resulting in an estimated economic loss of $5,409,200 dollars” said Bach.
In 2005, Wisconsin was the site of 125,174 crashes, of which 700 were fatal accidents and 801 people were killed. Of the 700 fatal crashes, 34% of the deaths were the result of speed-related crashes. Speed was listed as a contributing cause in 19% of all crashes. Excessive speed is often associated with other high-risk behaviors that increase the likelihood of a crash and of significant injury or death occurring; these include following to closely and failure to wear safety belts.
